It has been 12 years since I set up my first website maZes in the end of 1999. Until now, maZes had a few redesign and changed a few web hosts, including Crookedmoon and .Mac (later MobileMe). Since building my portfolio with Flash in 2006, I have not been updating maZes for years. Recently Apple is ditching web hosting in the move to iCloud, and I have been planing to restructure my online presence. As a result, I will retire maZes and get rid of Flash site all together to set up my portfolio on a new hosting platform. I have also been tiding up this blog little by little since last year, and it will remain my major web journal.

迷宮網站架設至今已滿十二年了。經過數次改版及遷徙，加上多年未更新，我現在終於打算關閉此站。理由是我想藉此機會一起停用現有的作品集網站，利用新的網路平台重做一個不依賴Flash的作品集。為了紀念迷宮舊站，我將部份網頁整理成相簿，進入這裡就可以閱覽。

Tintin comics fanart (2000)

The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin / 丁丁歷險記) by Hergé was one of the first comics series I ever read when I was little. I was extremely excited to learn the comic books when my grandfather bought the first translated version (in Taiwan) and presented to me. It remained profoundly influential in my childhood.

I did a mini fanart back in 2000.

Japanese mangaka Sakura Mizuki and I met in London ICA in 2004, we have been in touch since. Recently he has completed a comics collection with his students from the Character Design Course at Design and Art Department of Osaka University of Arts Junior College, which he wanted to present to me. Today I have received this wonderful gift from him, along with another book of Inoue Takehiko: The LAST Manga Exhibition as a nice surprise to me.

Sigma DP2 is a compact digital camera featuring an unique DSLR quality Foveon X3 direct image sensor, a fixed 24.2 mm (35 mm equivalent 41 mm) f/2.8 lens, and the capability to record image data in RAW and JPEG formats (but not at the same time). It has become my camera of choice despite many limitations and drawbacks (such as: slow autofocus and performance in general; no zoom for single focal length; needed an extra lens and hood adapter for close-up photography; very slow RAW processing for its X3F file format in Sigma's current Photo Pro 3 software).

Random Access Narrative look-alike

When recently came across Rory’s Story Cubes® I was really surprised, because of its resemblance of my MA major project Random Access Narrative (RAN) in 2006, as if someone took the idea from our degree show without notice. But at the same time I understand it is possible that someone was thinking along a similar line. I am glad to see the idea is now proven valuable.

It is interesting to compare their development, journeyed from early Rubik’s Cube attempt to later six-sided cubes for the design solution, to my RAN project. I was focusing more on the development of the visual contents rather than the form, which took shape in the relatively earlier stage of my project development.

The RAN project was initially conceived for the purpose of an alternative storytelling method as I am from comics, illustration/ graphic design background. It's intriguing to know that, someone else is developing and utilising the cubes as an aid for solving a broader range of problems. It's also good to see their expansions to the story cubes such as the "picto-verbs" version and a digital application.

It will be really interesting to see how various professional disciplines practise creative methods as such to shape the future.
